Mistigram: plus ça change... today Count Binface is campaigning against Nigel Farage in Clacton, but nine years ago it was his predecessor #LordBuckethead running against Theresa May in Maidenhead. One item on his manifesto was the return of Ceefax, so #teletext artists, in this case @illarterate, were only too keen to boost his campaign. This screen was included in the MIST0717 artpack collection released nine years ago this month.

MIST0624/ILLARTERATE-FAXSCII-FAXHACKED

 Mistigram: this #fax-themed #textmode art screen, made using the variety of #ASCII character set specific to the #AmstradCPC, was drawn by @illarterate for the 2023 Amstrad ASCII Compo, where it placed 7th out of 13 entries. We included it in the MIST0624 artpack collection released two years ago.

MIST0418/SMELLARTERATE-RUBBER_CUP

 Mistigram: I expect that this stylish yet offbeat #teletext screen, like oodles of others, was drawn by @illarterate for inclusion in Rail Slave Games' now-shuttered computer game #SelfieSistersOfTheAmnioticLens. It was included in the nonsensical MIST0418 April Fool's artpack collection released eight years ago this month.

 Mistigram: this #teletext illustration of a hungry #blackbird was jointly made by @illarterate and Sarah Burgess, and was included in this month's new seasonal MIST1225 artpack collection.

MIST-30/ILLARTERATE_MRZERO

 Mistigram: this fauvist portrait of #MrZero, the announcer from the #FZero racing games, was drawn by @illarterate and won 1st place in the Nova 2024 demoparty's #Teletext compo. It was also included a year ago in the MIST-30 30th anniversary celebration artpack collection.

 Mistigram: What do you get for someone whose birthday is on Halloween? This @illarterate screen, 'Ghost in a Box', placed 2nd in the @flashparty #teletext compo two years ago and was included in the spooky MIST1023 artpack collection also released two years ago.

IMBIBE01/ILLARTERATE-PIE_TIME

 Mistigram: I can't presume to speculate why @illarterate drew this #teletext illustration in the first place, but today, #PiDay, is definitely the occasion on which to share it.  This piece was included in the recent food-themed IMBIBE01 electronic magazine.

MIST-30/ILLARTERATE-HOT_BOTZ

 Mistigram: this monochrome scene, promoting the fictitious 0300-HOT-BOTZ chatline, was drawn by @illarterate. It placed 6th in last year's #ATASCII competition, and was included in the recent MIST-30 artpack celebration.

MIST1121/ILLARTERATE-AUTOMATIC

 

Mistigram: this blinking #teletext screen by @illarterate depicts a Microsoft #Windows95 desktop in the middle of having a trash fire meltdown. (It's not too late to give OS/2 a spin!) This piece was included in the MIST1121 artpack collection.

MIST1024/ILLARTERATE-MUDMON

 Mistigram: this little yellow (it says green but I think they left out the blue) mud man must hail from the West Midlands, and not Jamaica as I initially suspected.  He was drawn in #teletext by @illarterate, and included in last month's spooky MIST1024 artpack collection. (What's so spooky? His dry cleaning bill!)

MIST1017/ILLARTERATE-GOOD-TIMES

 Mistigram: perhaps the scariest thing imaginable to a computer hobbyist is the pwning and ruination of their expensive machines by hackers. This scenario is explored in this #teletext screen by @illarterate, titled #GoodTimes after the renowned faux-virus. This piece was included in the spooky MIST1017 artpack collection released seven years ago this month.

 Mistigram: you may not have realised that the #GrimReaper was a Yorkshireman, but @illarterate lays all doubts to rest in this #teletext illustration, included in the spooky MIST1020 artpack collection released four years ago this month.

MIST0624/ILLARTERATE-WALNUT_THE_OWL

 Mistigram: when you split a walnut in half, the interior structure of the shell can resemble an #owl face. I expect that's why this #textmode composition by @illarterate, which won 3rd place in the 2023 #ATASCII art compo, is named "Walnut the Owl". It was included in the recent unthemed MIST0624 artpack collection.

MIST0424/ILLARTERATE-VIRUSTRUVIAN_MAN

 Mistigram: this #teletext screen by @illarterate reproduced #LeonardoDaVinci's #VitruvianMan illustration to comment on the recommendations for social distancing guidelines issued early on during the Covid-19 pandemic. This piece was included in the recent fine art-themed MIST0424 artpack collection.

MIST1221/ILLARTERATE-SANTA

 

Mistigram: a very tired-looking Santa Claus looks at the viewer head-on and offers two opposing possibilities for approaches to the holiday season.  This #teletext screen was drawn by @illarterate and included in the MIST1221 artpack collection released two years ago this month.

In the style of the logo from Viz Magazine comes this, the teletext introduction to Illarterate’s MISTFAX teletext sequence in the just-released MIST1116 artpack! (which, of course, you can browse over here.) Sadly, the promises of naughty words and pictures are not substantiated… unless it turns out that something prurient is waiting to be unleashed by the teletext “REVEAL” button!

When I courted Illarterate to make a submission to last year’s Mistigris artpack, I just expected to unlock permission to reprint classics from his back catalogue. Instead, he asked me what kinds of subjects characterised ANSI art – and suggested that he would attempt to transpose them across textmode mediums to teletext. I told him, well, superheroes, especially form Image Comics, and toon subjects such as Calvin & Hobbes and Animaniacs. And, well, here is what we got!

Today on Mistigram, Illarterate drew us this lovely garish teletext cake for our 21st birthday marked by the MIST1015 artpack. To celebrate the occasion I posed in a goofy selfie blowing out the candles with his VR girl enjoying the scene through augmented reality. (Truthfully, though I’ve always been a fan of angry fruit salad, I don’t know if my stomach is strong enough for teletext cake.)
