Today on Mistigram, a #typewriter #photomanipulation by @redeyephoto seen in the recent MIST0317 artpack collection… because they can’t all be teletext screens /every/ day. (well actually, they could… but we like to mix it up a little!) http://ift.tt/2pjXCYU
Today on Mistigram, a striking piece of #teletext by TeletextR adapting imagery from Kubrick’s #ClockworkOrange film adaptation of Anthony Burgess’ book: “The Korova Milkbar was a milk-plus mesto.” This image was released in the MIST0217 artpack. http://ift.tt/2pvooxS
Also for Mistigram, promoting tonight’s closing party for the “Glitch: the aesthetics of failure” exhibition at the Old Courts in Wigan, featuring the cream of contemporary UK teletext, with this far-seeing piece of #ansiart from our M-9806-A Mist Classic artpack nearly 19 years ago, drawn by Kayam and Da Drug - who are not involved in this exhibition. Phew! http://ift.tt/2pGfmPF
Today on Mistigram, another @illarterate #teletext peculiarity - I fully expect that “Bananamania” is a reference to some new wave brand, possibly of UK provenance, of which I have never heard. But I can still delight in the immaculate dither shading and the absurdity of its little green lightning bolts. This piece was released in the MIST0317 artpack. http://ift.tt/2pbEYCn
Today on Mistigram… ramping down the April Foolishness as the month approaches its end in favour of our run of the mill folly, here’s an extraordinarily straightforward drawing by @starstew from MIST0217, entitled “Warmaids of Zanita”. http://ift.tt/2qbFUbn
Today on Mistigram, another @illarterate #teletext masterwork from our recent MIST0417 April Fool’s artpack collection: “Meatybits”, celebrating the dubious provenance of mystery meat! http://ift.tt/2q7BT7J
Today on Mistigram, another imposition of millennial narcissism on a classic scenario - this one from #Jaws by @taffi_louis and released in our recent MIST0417 April Fool’s artpack collection. Now smile, I wanna see those pearly whites! http://ift.tt/2pvYcUL
Today on Mistigram, from the recent April Fool’s MIST0417 artpack, it’s another Ice Cream Emperor collision of modern art with cutting edge deep dream neural nets! How would a robot trained on cats paint a Rothko? A: horrifyingly. http://ift.tt/2on6luF
Today on Mistigram, in honour of @nicheinterests ’ Big Pixels party last night, a ~2004 homage to @invaderwashere installed by himself and Pannekoekologist (go on, ask him what he stepped in) at the “Pit Of Doom” at Burrard Skytrain station. It’s the scorpion from Activision’ s first giant hit, David Crane’s Pitfall! for the Atari 2600, and an image of the tile mosaic was included in the MIST2000 artpack collection a little over a decade down the line in January of 2016. http://ift.tt/2pSzNFT
Today on Mistigram - not just another Upworthy meme by Glowing Fish from the recent MIST0417 April Fool’s artpack, but also a reminder that I’m hosting my Big Pixels vintage gaming party today, so please consider coming on by and mashing some buttons! (note: while my collection is in excess of a thousand pieces, it does not actually include #Metroid for the NES. Alas.) http://ift.tt/2ozINOp
And because it’s just a #teletext kind of day - @illarterate drew a memorial to #prince Rogers Nelson, who died on this day one year ago. Released in MIST0317. http://ift.tt/2oZylkU
Opening today - Chel Logan’s exhibition “Glitch: the aesthetics of failure”, including #teletext from @illarterate, @raquelmeyers, @Polyducks, teletextr, @jellica_______, Mr. Biffo and more… folks you’ve seen in Mistigris artpacks past, present and future. April 21-30 at the Old Courts in Wigan. http://ift.tt/2pMn3TL
Today on Mistigram, in honour of 4/20 yesterday as well as last night’s release of the Blender 2017 entries at http://ift.tt/2obMYnW we share this circa 1999 terrible piece of ANSI art (still on the April Fool’s kick, you dig!) drawn by K-thulu+++ and written by his pal Zinnia Kray (recently a visitor back to her hometown!) for Hennifer’s Blender2000 relaunch about MONSTERS / EATING / AMSTERDAM. The text is all Pulp Fiction pastiche, then we switched into full Dutch randomly copied from a web page… then randomly fortified with “j"s to look even more Dutch. http://ift.tt/2otEEfz
Today on Mistigram, because one April Fool’s FILE_ID.DIZ deserves another, here’s an #ASCIIart specimen used in our MIST0496 artpack. http://ift.tt/2oPw6lJ
Today on Mistigram - bet you didn’t realize that K-thulu+++’s FILE_ID.DIZ for the recent MIST0417 April Fool’s artpack was based on two vintage pieces of #KLF / JAMs iconography, did you? The only thing we’re missing is an ice cream van. http://ift.tt/2pVI3nJ
Today on Mistigram… I hear you, I’m getting a little burned out on April Fool’s also. So here in its place, some great @horsenburger #teletext art from recent packs (MIST0217 in this case) that we never yet managed to squeeze into a Mistigram post! It’s David Tennant as The Doctor from #drwho … plus a little #tardis action off to the side! http://ift.tt/2pgSs0V
Today on Mistigram… OK, there’s not a lot going on here, @taffi_louis simply replaced one word with a similar one. But if you were putting together a collection of jokes and gags immediately after cutting a Trainspotting fan video, you would have included this one also. http://ift.tt/2pBPu49
Hats off to @bryfacetron for representing us at the recent Revision demoparty in three categories, winning 4th place with this ANSI art depiction of his chipmusic axe, the Game Boy (entitled the Four Channels of the Apocalypse.) Catch him performing his chiptunes in Europe while he’s there! http://ift.tt/2pOumqv
Today on Mistigram, we look at @taffi_louis ’ whole suite of altered and completely confabulated GI Joe action figure packages as released in the recent MIST0417 April Fool’s artpack collection. Every one tells a different kind of joke in the same limited format - my favorite is the official card for Harry Tuttle, the guerrilla heating engineer from Terry Gilliam’s Brazil. http://ift.tt/2nW5wIX
Today on Mistigram, K-thulu+++ asked the question in the recent MIST0417 #AprilFools artpack collection - sure, posing for a selfie in a shirt reading #LOL just before assassinating the brother of a North Korean dictator is hard af, but harder still is posing for a commemorative #ASCIIart portrait composed entirely of the upper and lower cases of the letters L O and L. http://ift.tt/2nSrpc5
Kalcha recently shared a piece of original Shift_JIS Ghost in the Shell fanart, which reminded us that we had a related tune in the Mist Classic vaults – Tricolore’s “Into My Mind”, composed in 1997, released by us in our final successful Mist Classic artpack release – M-9806-C – before a sixteen year hiatus. Two more pieces of textart illustration and a little slog in the video editor later, and here you have a lean music video setting for some of Tricolore’s tradmark lean electronic minimalist music. From Project 2501 to Tricolore to us to you – enjoy!
Today on Mistigram - some April Fool’s jokes are hilarious, and others are simply… easy to implement. Onetime VGA department head Grim Reaper here demonstrated the latter with virtuosic minimalist elegance in this ANSI art joke piece from MIST0496. There was some concern about his being caught ripping later on in his computer art career, but we enjoy a reasonable degree of confidence in this masterwork being a wholly original creation. (then again… I keep thinking I’ve seen that block before! It’s probably nothing…) http://ift.tt/2p7TBbf
Today on Mistigram, @theresaoborn extrapolated the function of the reviled manbun from some solid #portlandia life advice, and “put a bird on it” in the recent MIST0417 April Fool’s artpack collection. The rendering is too good to qualify as bad art, but its heart is in the right, foolish, place. http://ift.tt/2pD1kdB
For today’s April Fool’s Mistigram flashback we offer the big punchline to @creonixx ’s 2017 ANSI art piece “Long trip to the demoparty”, (spoiler: the traveling competitor is a cat) which took 4th place in its category at Revision 2016 and which we released in the MIST0416 artpack. (Hats off to our colleagues at #revision 2017 - hi, @bryfacetron - running this long weekend.) http://ift.tt/2ognYXX
Today on Mistigram, @taffi_louis showed us the middle ground between April Fool’s folly and body horror in the recent MIST0417 artpack. Instagram cut off the caption - “already sent you a face pic”, and we fill in the blanks: the model is Mark Wahlberg, presumably in his underwear model days. http://ift.tt/2obXM1w
Today’s vintage April Fool’s selection is another K-thulu+++ mash-up, in this case Avril Harrison’s iconic mask of King Tut, gold standard for the Amiga’s graphical capabilities and actual cover art for most versions of Deluxe Paint… run through what looks like PETSCII conversion in PLAYSCII. The point? That may be asking a bit too much of it. Postmodernism! Released in MIST0415. http://ift.tt/2pzNvMQ
Pixel Pompeii fans, part 29 of our series on video game-themed textmode art has just landed, and the variety of textmode featured this time around is the 3-bit art form beloved by millions of bored UK television viewers - #teletext ! You can enjoy the selection, featuring works by @illarterate , @horsenburger , Polyducks and more, up at http://ift.tt/2oE4bW6http://ift.tt/2pdYZpP
Today on Mistigram, a foolish painting by @minkant from our recent MIST0417 April Fool’s collection. The painting is actually very nicely rendered, its inclusion was all about the resonance of its sassy tone: trolololol! http://ift.tt/2nIuV8J
Today’s April Fool’s Mistigram flashback is an #andywarhol #popart ANSI experiment by K-thulu+++ who by August of 1999 had been missing an active Mistigris in which to release foolish experiments for an entire year. Fortunately for him, madasscow’s gonzo anti-art spree in The Project was doing a textmode special in their sixth production, which ended up (while Cthulu was on pilgrimage to Assembly and Evoke with God Among Lice) releasing what amounted to a posthumous Mistigris Fool’s artpack. The subject here is that artscene staple - Todd MacFarlane’s Image Comics hero #Spawn - mined from another goofy (but more standard) depiction in that same collection. http://ift.tt/2p6XSeC
From the April Fool’s vaults, a K-thulu+++ faux-textmode portrait of reviled Wu-tang fan Martin Shkreli, released in MIST0416 as part of a suite including portraits of Donald Trump and late Toronto mayor Rob Ford. http://ift.tt/2o2pYmq
Today on Mistigram, @tim.ereneta provided us some low grade folly for the MIST0417 April Fool’s artpack with this beautiful shot of a malfunctioning window. I know that the precise nature of the error is difficult to perceive - I choose to believe that the window has experienced a synching failure and is supposed to be depicting a wintery snow-dusted vista. http://ift.tt/2oUEy4B
Surprise! Our group name appears in print (twice!) in vol. 2 of “Masters of Pixel Art” c/o @rakelmeyers & Pannekoekologist. Her guest shot in MIST1015 was part of her worthwhile chapter, and he backed the Kickstarted volume under our name. It’s a handsome tome and I highly recommend everyone pick up two or three copies. (and now our Wikipedia notability is indisputable!) http://ift.tt/2p0slYH
Today on Mistigram, an historical April Fool’s piece that pretty much speaks for itself – a 1970s needlepoint design of some help cats chilling at a jazz club by retired NFL athlete Rosey Grier, adapted (with tool assistance, and dig that TheDraw font!) by K-thulu+++ into an ANSI art version. First released in MIST0415. http://ift.tt/2p0aAJ2
Congratulations to Burps of the imminently-reviving Fuel for winning Blender 2017 with this piece of ANSI art - you only see the font here spelling out the compo topics, but for the full picture and all the other entries (hats off to Mel Farr Superstar for winning second place with a Qbasic choose-your-own-adventure, and returning champion God Among Lice taking third with a conceptual quickie) stay tuned for the BLNDR2017 artpack release later this month. http://ift.tt/2nxQbhv
Today on Mistigram, @taffi_louis gave Return of the Jedi the Upworthy treatment (you may be the leader of the Rebellion but you sure ain’t no SJW!) in the recent MIST0417 April Fool’s collection. http://ift.tt/2nU6lgc
Today on Mistigram, perhaps our best April Fool’s outsider ANSI art ever - a rendition of Sanrio’s #HelloKitty by Mist Classic lit staple Zinnia Rock (who basically did all the cool things I did in my ‘20s - work in radio and at the anarchist bookstore - a decade earlier.) First released in the MIST0496 artpack 21 years ago, this served as my desktop wallpaper for probably a decade and a half. Now you have that option also! http://ift.tt/2omyccS
This ANSI, by Minister of Glue, from the millennial Blender 2000 compo #6, makes as good an excuse as any to announce that the subjects for our now-in-progress Blender 2017 improv art contest have now been set : COOL DADS / COOKING / THE APOCALYPSE. You have 22.5 hours to send in your creations in to info@mistigris.org http://ift.tt/2nsIbhG
In just a few hours we are starting this year’s Blender compo - details at http://ift.tt/2nsCoUj - but if you want to help us roar out of the gate you can jump the gun and privately contact us beforehand with some suggestions for a PERSON, a PLACE and an ACTIVITY from which to derive the competition’s subject. (Awesome ANSI art Blender logo by the phenomenal and much-missed Tricolore.) http://ift.tt/2oaNobd
Today on Mistigram, Vermeer meets Snapchat in K-thulu+++’s “Dog With a Pearl Earring” from the recent MIST0417 April Fool’s collection. http://ift.tt/2nqx8pg
Today on Mistigram, an April Fool’s piece from MIST0415: a pairing of a stock TheDraw font with a GIF2ANS conversion of “Lena”, a Playboy centerfold who has proven through the ages to be a crucial benchmark of the surprisingly sexist computer graphics field. A deliberately ugly presentation of a sadly tacky subject! To use her image unironically after this would be a folly too far. http://ift.tt/2oMfjBs
Starting in about 32 hours we are running the #blender2017 competition (for 24 hrs, no excuses Europe!) The Blender is a creative exercise in combining the use of three surprise subjects into one harmonized whole. In this Instagram post we share the first ten (of 12 - there are arbitrary technical constraints) parts of God Among Lice’s winning entry from Blender 2016 for MONKEY / BAKING / FACTORY, which you can see in toto at http://ift.tt/2oaTD0h … the ending is a real climax of pathos! It was acclamated as the sole entry ultimately submitted, but I think you will all agree that it was well worthwhile, getting his whole family in on the act. Full details for participation in tomorrow’s Blender at http://ift.tt/2nsCoUj … please consider joining us with some improvised fun frivolity! http://ift.tt/2o6rNQT
Today on Mistigram, @taffi_louis delivers our third tribute to @obeygiant (along with a great deal beyond) with a very different texture to our most recent. This of course was in our MIST0417 April Fool’s collection of gags successful and otherwise - I like to think that this one lands closer to the former than the latter. http://ift.tt/2ogovwP
We’re running #blender2017 this Saturday! To refresh… The 38th installment of the “Blender” IRC competition took place in 1997 defying participants to create improvised art about its three crowdsourced themes: Sherlock Holmes / dancing / at the YMCA. Mistigris cleaned up, taking all three spots on the podium with separate entries. (Our 1st-place entry, a tracker-music cover of the Village People song COMPLETE WITH ANIMATED ASCII MEN DOING THE DANCE, is not even included in this gallery.) Here you can see three separate computer art attempts by Mistigris members to combine all those ingredients into one semicoherent whole.
If this kind of creative challenge sounds like it might be fun, please join us this Saturday for our attempt to recapture the magic once this year. Full details at http://ift.tt/2nsCoUj (I can’t wait to see how IFTTT syndicates the multiple image Instagram gallery!) http://ift.tt/2p7O4ND
Today on Mistigram… Grinch was a deft hand at tracker music and ripscrip vector graphics, so why not try ANSI art?… Oh. Surely the results are unusable for artpack purposes, then? Oh no, just sit on it until April Fool’s rolls around… 1998! http://ift.tt/2oNbPeJ
Today on Mistigram, another foolish photo from the recent MIST0417, this one by @infindeath, commemorating a calmer kind of companionship than the first flush of love embodied by last night’s Loveseats. http://ift.tt/2o0X9IE
Today on Mistigram, an historic selection from April Fool’s of years yore. Well, year yore. The fine art photograph our discriminating tastes would not allo us to omit, from the MIST0416 artpack, we present K-thulu+++’s… “Loveseats”. http://ift.tt/2p2pLk0
Psst. Did we mention that we’re running an annual installment of the Blender IRC compo this Saturday? We take suggestions from the crowd for a subject, an action and a location, then people try to create art incorporating all three. Will it Blend? Details at http://ift.tt/2nsCoUj
PS, ANSI art logo drawn for Blender 17 (released in my first, 18) by… artist unknown. 8) http://ift.tt/2nblCOj
Today on Mistigram, one of our most technologically sophisticated April Fool’s gags - Ice Cream Emperor fed the contours of Malevich’s “Icon” (a stark, all-black square) into a neural net that had been trained on cat pictures. And what did he get out the other end? Feline nightmare fuel. From the recent MIST0417 artpack collection. http://ift.tt/2nDvHPA
Today on Mistigram, a classic (but not THAT Classic) piece of April computer art tomfoolery: underground computer art typography often drew inspiration from hip hop graffiti stylez… Mistigris less so. K-thulu+++, the elite alter ego of our founder, set out to address this for April Fool’s 2015, with this HIGHLY ORIGINAL and totally underivative ASCII art logo. Mistigris: ain’t nuthin’ ta muck with. http://ift.tt/2oA4vpf
