Sadly not the Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion, which takes another M at the end. Perhaps they are looking into using a particular strain of algae in conjunction with genetically engineered anaerobic bacteria to break down plastics. Today on Mistigram, we wrap up our IWD series of paintings by @delphinehennelly of women and their smartphones, originally released in our MIST1116 22nd anniversary artpack collection. If this untitled piece seems vaguely familiar, go back and take a peek at yesterday’s post… it’s an earlier draft of the same composition, rendered in a different style! I know that you computer artists are used to the luxury of just being able to try out a filter then roll it back if you’re not satisfied with the end result, but Delphine has to go and actually paint it all! Fortunately, she enjoys the labour of painting. “Not so much a study but sometimes I paint the same image over again. I’m into seriality as a way to dig deeper into an image.” The particulars are shuffled here, with new details such as the jewelry and dove sandals, but the panopticon gravity here remains the crux, the weight of the world resting on the smartphone operator, surveiled closely not only by her two friends and her own device, but even by the fabric pattern on her picnic blanket. Illuminati imagery is everywhere, which is of course the whole point of Illuminati imagery: all eyez on her, and any remarks about gazes would be wholly extraneous. Thanks for watching (har har), and tomorrow we should have some special new vein of content for you! http://ift.tt/2moHcua

Today on Mistigram, “The Instagrammers” by...

Today on Mistigram, “The Instagrammers” by @delphinehennelly are rounding the bend of our IWD week and this series of paintings released in our MIST1116 22nd anniversary artpack collection. The lazy, crazy salad days of summer are behind us now, and these women are all business. (well, business casual, I spot at least one bare foot.) There is important, landscape mode smartphone work to be done here, so in keeping with the Instagram terms of service, all breasts are covered up. Though the pastoral oak leaves still fill out this scene (up to and including the pattern on the subject’s leggings, because we never forget where we came from,) it is the bluish tinge of asphyxiation on her face that tells the whole story here - every other feature of this painting is depicted in loose, sketchy terms, while the one blade of grass anchoring us to some species of reality is that concerned visage, bathed in the stark blue light of harsh reality, as revealed by the glowing rectangle held in her hands. Everywhere the world is still formless and replete with potential, hazy and fantastical except where the screen’s glowing gaze falls, grounding and rendering mundane everything that it lands upon. Just look what it’s done to my Maenads! http://ift.tt/2mjppEd

Today on Mistigram, another fabulous painting by...

Today on Mistigram, another fabulous painting by @delphinehennelly from MIST1116, celebrating International Women’s Day for a week by exhausting this suite of woman-painted women, strongarming their way into this realm of computer art courtesy of their seeming fixation with the same smartphone I use to share these daily art posts with you on Instagram. (But I’m normal and they’re fixated, right?) By the time they reach this painting (entitled “Hen of the Woods” a mushroom 🍄 described in Japan as “dancing”, with properties of immune stimulation in cases breast cancer, known to grow at the base of oak trees such as whose leaves carpet this scene), I would speculate that our lithe nubiles have overindulged in vice - by which I mean social media and streaming video. You only usually see that shade of blue staining their visages on faces confronted with blue screens of death after all-night sprees building virtual castles of sand… and on the lips of drowned sailors washed into the harbour after a ferocious storm. (Is there a message in that blue bottle at the top left?) Ironically, as they zone out into the infinite realms of the mind implied by the postage stamp-sized windows through which they explore, their ripe physicality makes a final, unnoticed, sensual bid for primacy in ecstatic contortions. When they finally look up from their phone screens, after reaching the end of the Internet or the built-in obsolescence of their particular model of iPhone, they run the risk of finding themselves immature adolescents trapped in the withered, gnarled bodies of spinster crones. (No, I’m not speaking from experience, why do you ask?) http://ift.tt/2mzC7Aa

Today on Mistigram, we continue in our IWD spree showcasing the smartphone-using paintings of @delphinehennelly as released in our MIST1116 22nd anniversary artpack.

OK, so the social media-bemused subject is not literally depicted as a woman, but rather, a rabbit. But as art is the lie that tells the truth, we must take it as given that Delphine is employing a bit of visual metaphor here. Like an idealized woman, the domesticated rabbit demonstrates qualities of softness, gentleness and fertility, decorated with a lovely ribbon accessory 🎀; you have only ever heard “bunny” as a female descriptor (hello, Playboy), and indeed I have a vivid memory of my sister’s high school math teacher being disciplined after describing a room full of his female students as “stunned bunnies”. Heck, don’t take it as given, I was able to get a few words from artist: “I do think of the bunny as a stand in for a girl. It is sort of the psyche of a girl in a particular position or self consciousness… Sort of more what it feels like when you’re being objectified a bit… Satisfied bunny, I see her as pleased as punch with herself, a little bit drunk and maybe high. The pomegranate also would imply perhaps some forbidden fruit reference…I was also thinking of Persephone.” But what is the significance (or even the topological logistics) of the contorted human hand holding the phone the bunny is using to enshrine her snack for posterity? Is that a second smartphone in the scene, a separate number the bunny reserves for important work-related calls? Come now, I can’t do all the heavy lifting for you all of the time! http://ift.tt/2mdAQ0O

Today on Mistigram we have more fearless painted ladies by...

Today on Mistigram we have more fearless painted ladies by @delphinehennelly who are living for themselves, letting it all hang out (literally: MIST1116 now marks the first appearance of public hair in a Mistigris artpack!) and quite simply will not be stopped. Demure? Saw that word once in a book they didn’t much care for. Responding to what they find online (which, let’s be frank, competes poorly with their living tableau) with every emotion on the spectrum, smoking cigarettes spread eagled and swiping right, they have no worries about their intimate self portraits turning up on revenge porn sites ruining their chances of future political careers.
The faded, washed-out almost watercolour colour scheme lends the whole image an overexposed demeanour - charges that could well be laid at its subjects also, but who are we to judge? When you find yourself in a situation with a smartphone and not a stitch of clothing, you may as well have fun using the phone until the charge runs down since it’s not like you’ve got anywhere to put it away, anyhow!
In conclusion, happy International Women’s Day, day 3. Really, I could run these paintings year-round. http://ift.tt/2msmVoy

Today on Mistigram, another group of women painted by...

Today on Mistigram, another group of women painted by @delphinehennelly , released in the MIST1116 artpack and featured here today in honor of International Women’s Day.
Less coy than the last group (this piece entitled “The Group” in turn), some of these ladies are bold enough to meet the viewer’s gaze directly, like Manet’s Olympia (ahem, her own Olympia, thank you very much) , acknowledging that between the paintbrushes and the selfie-taking smartphone, they have seized the means of image production, to serve new masters (mistresses, actually) with different priorities.
Now clothed, now nude, according to their capricious pleasure, they are living it up on their own terms without concern for the consequences of being caught by that slut-shaming male gaze. Actaeon, mind yourself! While a variety of moods are in evidence across their faces, they have consensus on this matter, and if a second opinion is called for, a whole sister contingent cavorts through sensual poses in the distant background (or is it an oak leaf-framed wallpaper, perhaps informed by these ladies’ inner thoughts), doubling down on the position (OK, on the various positions, but unified in their conclusion) and serving as a reminder that images are not the only important thing whose means of production they enjoy a monopoly over. http://ift.tt/2n3Diem

Today on Mistigram, the painting “Dance U” by...

Today on Mistigram, the painting “Dance U” by @delphinehennelly in honor of #internationalwomensday ♀, released in our MIST1116 22nd anniversary artpack collection.

The presentation here is striking, soft women’s bodies in gentle pastel colours, strategically posed to minimize elements titillating to the male gaze, while the subjects are themselves preoccupied in capturing their own images for their own purposes, enshrined as painted by a woman. Paintings can’t talk, but I bet if this one could it would pass the Bechtel test.
You’ve seen a couple of Delphine’s paintings from this smartphones-and-selfies series on Mistigram before, but as there are seven more we’ve been waiting for a chance to showcase, we’ll be celebrating IWD with them for a full week! The computer artscene, to say nothing of the wider art world (and indeed, the world at large) is an intensely dudely place, stunk up with the hobbies and preoccupations of boys and men, and while Mistigris have done our best to court, cater to and champion refreshing new approaches and perspectives from our emissaries from the “other” world of women, with (by some metrics) greater female participation than in the rest of the scene cumulatively… there’s still a long way to go. http://ift.tt/2n6vxkP
