ADEPTAPRIL/NOV10
Mistigram: AdeptApril has drawn a stylized #ANSIart #telephone handset today in order to metaphorically convey that today is #AreaCode Day! Back when we were confined to the use of landlines and local calling plans, when telecommunications were conducted through #dialup connections over phone lines, the boundaries of these invisible territories demarcated specific manifestations of cyberspace that were beyond our reach. We make a big deal about having been established and rooted in area code #604 -- describing the province of British Columbia in Canada -- and coincidentally just a couple of days ago we wrote an extensive gloss of our home area code on a wiki we recently established, over at https://github.com/NicheInterests/mistfunk/wiki/area-code-604 , since entries pertaining to our corner of cyberspace are slowly but surely finding themselves purged from Wikipedia. If there are other subjects you'd like to see covered, please drop a line -- or feel free to send in an article yourself!

Last night our community radio colleagues at the long-running Art of Beatz radio program closing the daily broadcast schedule at CFRO Co-Op Community Radio (100.5 fm in Vancouver BC) were kind enough to have us on their show to present a curated hourlong tour through the rich history of the .MOD tracking and computer music tradition of area code 604, by way of promoting the imminent MIST1116 artpack battering down the gates.
Tonight on Art Of Beatz Radio: Mistigris and Chad Munson
Hour 1: Mistigris
Tuck in your Tamagotchi and crack open a frosty bottle of J0lt cola, for everything old is new again: this week we’re celebrating a local tradition of 2 and a half decades of computer music out of area code 604 with Cthulu of the computer art collective MiSTiGRiS (est. 1994), who will be representing a golden thread of chiptunes and musictrackers from the LSDJ of today all the way back to the Commodore Amiga and Atari ST. Sine waves, static channels, and samples – oh my!
You can hear the whole hourlong broadcast as a digital audio stream or, if you already know the history and don’t want me blabbering on top of all the songs, I’ve prepared a download of “just the tunes”. And here’s the playlist!

Happy birthday to The Screaming Tomato BBS, which opened to the public August 24th, 1994 – 21 years to the day. (Nitnatsnoc made a great “Odd Couple” foil to me: “TST birthday in August? That’s weird, because the way I remember it, I talked to you about my idea of starting up a BBS when we were in the caf at Kits.”) This marks the first of three posts I’ll be making here to celebrate all the great art that was made to promote a point in cyberspace that, well, was ephemeral but made its mark!
Around the turn of the century, acutely aware that my command over that exciting but rapidly-receeding time would fade over the years, I made an effort to document the salient points of all my top bulletin board services over at bbsmates.com (then mirrored them over at textfiles.com). Here’s what I said about TST:
Tragic victim of the “the adjective noun” BBS-name syndrome of 1994 [strongly influenced by Eerie’s “Sarcastic Toaster”], this was the board I was both co-SysOp of and locked out from - on numerous occasions. From an early start of adolescent silliness (great, a message base called “World Wildlife Wrestling Federation” - now what are we going to put in it?) this provided the base from which MiSTiGRiS was almost accidentally founded. Also WHQ of Cenobite, a lit group run by Schtroumpf gleaning from the creme of Mist’s writers, it is bizarre that this BBS didn’t amass more surreal artwork than it did [actually, you know, that was maybe enough of it], but when all is said and done this board probably represented the 604 to more long-distance artscene callers than any other.
We were just kids joking around at the cafeteria table (see, on that point we agree!) when we began plotting out our BBS, like other kids might obsessively design a customized sports car with dual cassette deck and an afterburner or doodle a luxury mansion with an alligator pit and a rooftop helipad on wrinkled foolscap. All of our friends had to be folded in somehow, even those who didn’t own modems or even computers. We would host all the online games, providing us something to chat about between classes, unique files (not much room for storage, so better make them text files reflecting our interests and serving to promote our cyberspace hideaway when they were invariably widely circulated)… and for a touch of class, a special focus on computer music, an art that was practiced widely in our area code.
Most importantly, it would be fully tricked out and customized, because we had personality in spades oozing out through every teenaged pore like a bad case of acne, and would have been incapable of reining it in even were we so inclined.
OK, ok. I had the oozing personality, and he had the spare phone line and hardware (but still no monkey fondulator drive!) Between the two of us, we knew that we had what we needed to bring to the table (well, the computer desk) to make this a BBS the likes of which no one had ever logged into before.
Nitnatsnoc came up, somehow, with the name. (“I remember you seemed initially unimpressed until you asked me what the name was going to be.”) Trying to contextualize it, I actually drew countless sketches of tomatoes in a variety of precarious, scream-inducing situations, manually tracing over them in jaggies (turning curves into straight lines alternating with corners) so as to suggest the ANSI blocks the pictures would need to be translated into over in BBS-land. (I didn’t have any particular aptitude for ANSI art, but despite having just learned about the underground flipside to the public domain BBS community, I knew that with my boundless creativity and limitless enthusiasm, I would surely have it well in hand in a matter of weeks. I applied to NWA (New Wave Artists that is, straight outta Richmond!) as an ANSI artist and computer musician – hey, how hard can it be? – and only grudgingly conceded to writing some poems, sorry, “lits” when I ran up against the crude state of PC tracking software (KingMod, never yet having heard the phrase “Scream Tracker” or the group name “Future Crew”.) Hm, writing rhyming couplets into a text editor results in no interface friction! Maybe this’ll go somewhere!
I had managed to parlay my way into NWA and from there, it merged with GRiP into iMPERiAL, and suddenly hosting a BBS with local .MOD music and a “Weird Al” Yankovic song lyric section wasn’t enough. We’d require elite affiliations for our board, for with them would come textmode ornamentation beyond anything either of us could produce! Nitty spent the summer tinkering with the BBS-to-be (using, I can’t remember, either Telegard or Renegade, one of the “Forum hacks” [EDITED: I was right, Nitty elaborates… and alludes to his poorly-timed period obsession with the band Queen – “TST originally ran on Telegard. Eventually, I felt a need to make the design more in-line with the art scene, but Telegard didn’t allow for much customization. So I shut it down (for a week or two? a month?) while I updated the board using Renegade and created new promo and menu art. That’s why that Batman ansi you posted has "revisited” written on it – it was used as part of the refresh. (Incidentally, I had totally forgotten about that pic and was surprised to see my sig on it. Also, “revisited” is a Queen reference; on their third album, the 7th track was called “In the Lap of the Gods” and their 13th and final track had the same name, with “revisited” tagged on.)“]), getting some hot tips from Access Denied of Field of Eggplants and Eerie of Sarcastic Toaster about how to get his own board off the ground, hooked up to echomail networks (ultimately plugged in to TABNet, Mistigris’ KiTSCHNet, SiHFNet, and ACiD’s AgoraNet), when catastrophe struck: shortly after releasing its August 1994 artpack, iMPERiAL dissolved. Our precious member board status! And from there, the frantic discussions resulting in the formation of Mistigris. It required a BBS to act as a WHQ and, fortunately, we just so happened to have one on the verge of being opened to the public. Before the end of the month, by August 24th, the "last callers” door was showing strange new nicknames beyond merely those of myself and Nitnatsnoc.
The first hurdle had been overcome: circumstances threw us in the water, and we swam. In June we were going to be faking it until we made it, and by the end of the summer… we were making… something! (Pictured: early welcome screen by Nitnatsnoc, early promotional art by myself, later promotional art by Nitnatsnoc – after Mist, after Integrity, in ACiD. Spoiler warning: he made it. And see below: my April Fool’s pack loader advertising the BBS; whether I ever “made it” was debatable, but faking it was never so fun.)
Next post – the salad days: other people also made promotional artwork for us! Lots of them!

Day 3 of Mistigris Music Madness brings us the second music disk release of our friends in Sonic Equinox, browser-audible at textmod.es (and still no closer to a solution to the SE mysteries posed in the previous post.)
The infofile (see above) might help to shed some light on things: at this point this group is now out of the hands of its mercurial musician and artist founders and under the guidance of a more even keel, programmer (of eg. PabloDraw) Eto – the man who either named himself after his BBS’ initials or came up with a BBS name to match his inscrutable nick.
See also above: ANSI visuals by Questor (Spawn in 1995? You don’t say!) from the application generator. In truth, you won’t see any of these visuals over at textmod.es , but sho ‘nuff you will be hearing the songs blasting in stereo* out of your computer speakers, tunes by SE stalwarts Beyond Inertia, Dark Avatar, Lethal Impact, and the one-man wrecking squad (sorry, in the first draft that read “cottage industry”) Onyx. It doesn’t look like their tunes are part of an internal competition anymore, so maybe that was just a passing fancy.
Day 2 of our project to remember the disappeared is off to a bumpy start, as I’d anticipated spending six days doling out “lost” music disks by our fellow travellers in 604 would-be demogroup SONiC EQUiNOX only to find them all sitting pretty (if, admittedly, in stark neglect) over at at the Hornet Archive.
Regardless, we got them sent in to textmod.es, so we ought to come up with something to say about them. The files speak for themselves, to some extent, but context is invaluable. Not much is on the public record regarding them – let’s see what was written on the topic in the annals of our house organ KiTHE e-mag (typically making use of
Equinox Music Interface Kit (EMIK) by Hexx of Sonic Equinox for music-playing capabilities 8):
* [SE] Sonic Equinox
* Founder: Darkforce and Illusionary Enigma
* Duration: Several months… a few small releases.
CT: A demo group featuring artists from Union, CiA, and iMPERiAL… Has some fabulous musicians, but suffers sloth…we don’t DO much…
Surreal Logic: Err, another musical group that I neglected to point out is SONiC EQUiNOX (love dem funky caps =), which seems to have a LOT of talent, and are releasing a lot of good MODs and S3Ms.
These glib, in-the-moment summaries gloss over some important facts: SONiC EQUiNOX (as SL notes – himself a recent rediscovery, come to think of it – gotta love those small “i”s) actually pre-dates MiSTiGRiS by some months, initially taking as its home base the BBS of Darkforce, “House of Style”, before he changed his mind about demoscene adventurism (and his UNiON affiliation 8) and doubled down on ANSI art domination with Integrity. It must have been with some desire to get a foot in the SE door that I wrote a lit for House of Style back in the pre-Mist iMPERiAL days: if you want to learn how to make computer music, maybe the thing to do is first figure out where the computer musicians are and hang with them.
It must have succeeded, since I was admitted into the BBS, if not the group: what precisely could a poet do for a demogroup, anyhow? Pen scrolly bars in iambic pentameter? (Heey… maybe that’s not such a bad idea!) I ended up writing a lyrical motion graphics poetry treatment for Onyx’s song The Tragedy of MacLes (which you may be lucky enough to see reconstructed and presented in MIST1015), but Dr. CPU was never able to do much with it. I get the feeling that the first year or so of Sonic Equinox was spent basically biting off more than they could chew – I vividly recall plans for a mega loader presentation of Freaq’s module Black Noise, but then by December of 1994 there we were releasing it in The Bells Of Yule, apparently dead in the water over in SE.
the whole pageantry
of the year was
awake tingling
near
(Pardon the poetic license; old literary habits die hard.)
This is their first music disk release, dated October of 1995. That would have synched up with Mist’s first anniversary, and remember – SE predated us! It takes a special kind of patience to keep a group together for over a year with zero releases, which as I can testify from the Mistigris World Tour… is bad for morale.
Anyhow, I could go on and on (seriously, read any of my infofiles), but I have more forgotten Sonic Equinox releases to discuss and more genuinely lost music to prepare and package for your enjoyment. (Speaking of infofiles – none here! So my cobwebby memory really is our best resource for insight into the early days of SE!)
Day 2: SE_D1095.ZIP
(Another strange memory: a vivid recollection that these music collections were distributed intermittently as .ARJ archives rather than .ZIPs, inadvertently discouraging their download and distribution with their arbitrary and mercurial non-standard iconoclasm (or did it milk an extra 5k of compression out of tracked music?). But somehow, all the existent archives are .ZIPs, so you’ll have to take my word for it.)
