Back in the ‘90s, there were many online services, but only a couple of them accommodated the limited budgets of the hungry young cyberpunks in the digital underground. One was the dialup BBS, but if you could access the Internet through a local dialup ISP or perhaps a nearby university, you could hobnob with faraway elites on the IRC (or Internet Relay Chat), the great granddaddy of Slack and Discord.
