MIST1121/ILLARTERATE-AUTOMATIC

Mistigram: this blinking #teletext screen by @illarterate depicts a Microsoft #Windows95 desktop in the middle of having a trash fire meltdown. (It's not too late to give OS/2 a spin!) This piece was included in the MIST1121 artpack collection.

ADEPTAPRIL/NOV30

Mistigram: from food storage and preservation to use as a vase or pencil holder or very small pot for a houseplant, the humble #MasonJar has so many potential applications it's a marvel it only gets one day and not an entire month.  This #ANSIart screen was drawn by AdeptApril.

BLIPPYPIXEL-BLACK_AI-DAY

Mistigram: here's a timely bonus #BlackFriday #teletext screen by @blippypixel for your enjoyment today in the era of AI excess: he calls it 'Black AI-day'. Talk to a human agent about the status of your discounted order?  I'm sorry, Dave, I can't do that.

MIST1121/BLIPPYPIXEL-IBM360

Mistigram: @blippypixel has drawn this #BBCMicro animation of a #mainframe computer suite (and its 9-track vacuum column magnetic tape drives!) from the flexible #IBMSystem360 family of machines, sold for a bit over a decade starting in 1965.  This piece was included in the MIST1121 artpack collection.

ADEPTAPRIL/NOV29

Mistigram: Today is not, as you must be aware, any kind of Sunday, let alone #AdventSunday. But in the year in which AdeptApril's #ANSIart calendar was drawn, a few years ago now, Advent Sunday did indeed fall on today's date. Consider it a dress rehearsal for two days from now.

MIST1121/ATONALOSPREY-CONNECTED_BY_EARTH_(WITH_STARS)

Mistigram: this prize-winning #teletext promo for @FreeGeekPDX, North America's community-level e-waste refurbisher, was drawn by @AtonalOsprey and included in the MIST1121 artpack collection.

ADEPTAPRIL/NOV28

Mistigram: in honour of Make Your Own Head Day, AdeptApril opened an #ANSIart editor and did the best she could with the unflattering colours present in the EGA palette.

MIST1121/AXL-RESIST

Mistigram: I'd say that this #PLAYSCII piece by @axltm, released a year ago in the MIST1121 artpack, was prophetic, but really when has resistance been bad advice in our lifetimes? Instead I'll say we post this to commemorate the recent death of #BASIC co-inventor #ThomasEKurtz.

ADEPTAPRIL/NOV27

Mistigram: Feeling the holiday season yet?  Well, hold up - there are still a few important secular occasions deserving of your attention... for instance, have you sponsored your #Turtle yet?  AdeptApril didn't want you to miss it, so drew this #ANSIart screen.

MIST1121/NICK_LAKOWSKY-KING_KONG_BUNDY

Mistigram: The oil paintings of Nick Lakowski played a big role in our revival over the past decade, playfully demonstrating that if the subject is a good fit, you can make incredible computer art without benefit of computers.  Case in point: this still from a 1988/89 advertisement for Vendex's #HeadStart computers, starring pro wrestler #KingKongBundy.  This piece was included in the MIST1121 artpack collection.

ADEPTAPRIL/NOV26

Mistigram: The year that AdeptApril's #ANSIart screen, pictured, was drawn, the American observance of #Thanksgiving fell on today's date.  In 2024 you still have a couple of days to go -- time to ransack the sofa cushions for change to put into the jukebox tomorrow night!

MIST1121/TEKST_TV-WIN_XP

Mistodon:@teksttv_dk has drawn a #teletext adaptation of Charles O'Rear's Sonoma vineyard photograph 'Bliss', famously used as the default wallpaper for #WindowsXP & likely the most viewed photograph in human history. This screen was included in the MIST1121 artpack collection.

ADEPTAPRIL/NOV25

Mistigram: the humble #jukebox really is an artifact from a previous era, but fans of coin-op amusements often find them under a big tent with video arcade cabinets & especially pinball machines. Today is their day*, so AdeptApril has inserted 25¢ and drawn an #ANSIart salute.

* actually, the timing is a little more complicated than that: when AdeptApril drew these screens years ago Nov 25 was Jukebox Day. It is actually pegged to "the day before Thanksgiving", the busiest day of bar activity in the US, when family congregating from out-of-town go out the night before the big home-cooked meal and get caught up with tunes and good times... so if you are making plans for your own family to observe Jukebox Day, it should technically be celebrated on Nov 27th this year.

MIST1121/POLYDUCKS-FLYING_TOASTER

Mistigram: The inimitable @Polyducks here drew a fabulous #flyingtoaster, mascot of the After Dark screensaver dynasty, in #textmode art (most likely using a character set and colour palette of his own devising). It was included in the MIST1121 artpack collection.

ADEPTAPRIL/NOV24

Mistigram: On this date in 1971, 43 years ago, Dan #DBCooper hijacked Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 305, parachuting out of the plane over Washington State with $200,000 in ransom money.  AdeptApril has drawn this #ANSIart version of the event in observance of the occasion.

MIST1121/BLIPPYPIXEL-CHOICE

Mistigram: the smell of fresh grass, the feel of the warm sun on your face and the wind blowing through your hair... @blippypixel wonders if one can get away with trading it all away for its mere appearance in this #BBCMicro hirez screen, 'Choice', included in the MIST1121 artpack collection.

ADEPTAPRIL/NOV23

Mistigram: 1, 1, 2, 3 ... it's a #FibonacciSequence, so today, 11/23, must be Fibonacci day!  (Festivities will be off the hook in 2058.)  How does one celebrate?  I have no idea.  But if you're like AdeptApril, you draw an #ANSIart screen about it!

MIST1024/CODEFENIX-GOING-SO-SOON

Mistigram: Codefenix must have been meant for this #ANSIart screen to adorn Constructive Chaos BBS' logoff screen, but the accusing boney finger of the spectre of death is applicable to all viewers everywhere.  It was included in last month's spooky MIST1024 artpack collection.

ADEPTAPRIL/NOV22

Mistigram: It's a wild combination of flavours, but by juxtaposing two different occasions for very different activities on the calendar today - going for a ride and starting your own country - in this #ANSIart screen it seems that AdeptApril is advocating a kind of bicycle-powered colonialism.

MIST1024/BLIPPYPIXEL-OH_GLOBBITS

Mistigram: #Berk, the plasticine servant prowling the subterranean realm beneath #TheTrapDoor, lumbers in the dark with arms wide open as colourful bugs hover overhead.  This animated #teletext screen was drawn by @Blippypixel and included in last month's spooky MIST1024 artpack.

ADEPTAPRIL/NOV21

Mistigram: If you see this wintry scene on a snack table at a holiday party, take a closer look.  If you see it wandering the Black Forest with your sibling, go the other way.  AdeptApril has drawn this delicious #ANSIart #Gingerbread house in observance of today's occasion.

MIST1024/JONINSCII-RIPLEY

Mistigram: In this Joninscii #ASCIIart animation, #EllenRipley (as played by #SigourneyWeaver in Ridley Scott's 1979 movie #Alien) holds an Incinerator unit, prepared to activate it in the direction of Big Chap.  This piece was included in last month's MIST1024 artpack.

ADEPTAPRIL/NOV20

Mistigram: AdeptApril reminds us in #ANSIart that today is Name Your PC day.  Back when Mist started and we were running MS-DOS and using Amigas and Atari STs, the only systems we encountered that had names were Unix ones we logged into remotely, but now for networking purposes all Windows, Linux and Mac machines must have names.  So I guess today is more of a matter of 'dwell on your PC's mandatory name' day.

ADEPTAPRIL/NOV19

Mistigram: today is observed as #GettysburgAddress Day, #EqualOpportunity Day, and Dedication Day, all of which mark the date #AbrahamLincoln delivered his famous 1863 speech at the dedication of the cemetery at the site of the Civil War battlefield. #ANSIart cannon by AdeptApril.

MIST1024/TGH-HOWL

Mistigram: this small #ANSIart (or #blockASCII) quickie #werewolf illustration, 'Howl', in the monochrome pixelart style of EzeeShady, was a very welcome guest appearance by The Green Herring in last month's spooky MIST1024 artpack collection.

MIST1024/ILLARTERATE-MUDMON

Mistigram: this little yellow (it says green but I think they left out the blue) mud man must hail from the West Midlands, and not Jamaica as I initially suspected.  He was drawn in #teletext by @illarterate, and included in last month's spooky MIST1024 artpack collection. (What's so spooky? His dry cleaning bill!)

MIST1119/NBREAKFAST-LOGO

Mistigram: Here's one more take on the "do your own version of the Mistigris logo" exercise from our 25th anniversary five years ago.  @NBreakfast heard a strange noise from the server farm under his desk, and what did he discover but an AR manifestation of our brand hovering in the air!  It's been a while since we spontaneously manifested like that!

ADEPTAPRIL/NOV18

Mistigram: this occasion may have gone unnoticed if not for AdeptApril drawing this #ANSIart screen for today, but it's Geographic Information Service Day today.  You can use your GIS for modeling, analysis, geocoding and more, so what are you waiting for?

MIST1024/CJY-JPNOGRE

Mistigram: the unfriendly face of an #oni 👹 (or if you prefer, Unicode consortium, 'Japanese ogre') stares down the viewer as binary code mixes with the rain, spelling out the hidden message '#ANSIart is dead'.  This screen was drawn by @ConsoleJockey and included in last month's spooky MIST1024 artpack collection.

ADEPTAPRIL/NOV17

Mistigram: here's a pandemic throwback for you: between the toilet paper shortages and the sea shanties, a lot of people stuck at home with an unexpected amount of free time on their hands temporarily took up the hobby of baking!  If you missed it, fear not, as AdeptApril reminds us via #ANSIart that today is Homemade #Bread Day!

Saturday, November 16, 2024

MIST1024/ATONALOSPREY-DEATH_ON_THE_PALE_HORSE

Mistigram: this is a manual #teletext adaptation by @AtonalOsprey of a detail from #GustaveDore's 1865 etching Death on the Pale Horse (or Vision of Death, depending on your translation.) It was included in last month's spooky MIST1024 artpack collection.

ADEPTAPRIL/NOV16

Mistigram: A half-dozen varied buttons appear against a dark backdrop in AdeptApril's #ANSIart observance of National #Button Day, prior the invention of the zipper the only fastener keeping clothes from flying open in the breeze (other than buckles and laces).

Friday, November 15, 2024

MIST1024/EEL_SANSHO-SHINIGAMI

Mistigram: this #ASCIIart illustration, depicting a #Shinigami who clearly has a lot in common with the Grim Reaper, was drawn by Eel Sansho and included in last month's spooky MIST1024 artpack collection.

ADEPTAPRIL/NOV15

Mistigram: I can see that the iconic Radio Flyer company has sponsored a #LittleRedWagon Day in March, so I have to assume that the version AdeptApril is asserting here in #ANSIart at the other end of the year is the generic competing version of the holiday endorsed by Lapp's Speedway Express.

MIST1024/ZII-SUCC

Mistigram: this #ANSIart screen depicting the horned, winged succubus #Albedo from the #Overlord novel/manga/anime series was drawn by Zeus II as an advertisement for Shurato's Heavenly Sphere BBS. It was included in last month's spooky MIST1024 artpack collection.

ADEPTAPRIL/NOV14

Mistigram: if you don't like cigarette warning labels your'e going to hate this -- #Seatbelt Day! Wildly this holiday (where we festively crash into obstacles unscathed?) was launched in 2019 as part of a joint venture by belt innovator Volvo and disruptive newcomer Uber in an attempt to reach that final 10% of the population who refuse to #BuckleUp despite their car's irritating audible alarms. This #ANSIart depiction of a three-point shoulder and lap belt was drawn by AdeptApril.

MIST1024/LITTLEBITSPACE-INTERPLANETARY

Mistigram: this #textmode art screen by @littlebitspace, "Interplanetary", figured prominently in last month's spooky MIST1024 artpack collection, because... wtf! So there's a cosmic conjunction of celestial spheres, fine! But what's up with the colossal, planet-sized skull? Is there an immense headless torso somewhere out there in orbit around Jupiter? Does the skull have a molten core, an atmosphere even? Every answer opens the door to weirder questions.

ADEPTAPRIL/NOV13

Mistigram: to understand the occasion, #SadieHawkinsDay, that AdeptApril's minimalist #ANSIart illustration is conveying here, you need to go way back to a 1937 installment of Al Capp's Li'l Abner comic strip, where for one day Sadie Hawkins, the mayor's homely daughter, would be entitled to marry any bachelor she could catch running a foot race. In the popular culture it has mellowed over the decades to simply indicate an occasion for a dance where women took the lead and asked men to attend with them, which in the 1930s might have been seen as shamelessly forward of them.

MIST1124 "Mistfunk" logo template

Mistigram: 26 years back, as Mist Classic entered its final year, we thought it would be fun to have different artists in our varied stable of creators demonstrate their different personal approaches toward colouring in and completing a plain Mistigris logo outline drawn by Rage, and the diverse results turned up in the M-9802 artpack collection.

For our 30th anniversary we're circulating another "unskinned" logo, this time drawn by ConsoleJockey and reading "Mistfunk", for friends to try their hand at finishing off in their own style.  If you're game to take a crack at it, you can find the generic version available as bitmap or block ASCII at https://mistigris.org/packs/MIST1124/ ... I recommend you go wild with it.

Let us know when your experiment is complete and we hope to include it in our artpack due out at the end of this month!

ADEPTAPRIL/NOV12

Mistigram: OK, enough moping over the war dead -- now it's time to celebrate Fancy Rat and Mouse Day! Just imagine these darling rodents scampering through the trenches in Ypres. This #ANSIart screen was drawn by AdeptApril.

MIST0822/DARKMAN-LANCASTER

Mistigram: Darkman Almighty has souped up this #ANSIart screen of an #AvroLancaster on a WWII bombing run over Germany, originally included in the MIST0822 artpack collection released two years ago, with a little #poppy action so as to render it suitable to share on #RemembranceDay.  Lest we forget!

ADEPTAPRIL/NOV11

Mistigram: today AdeptApril uses #ANSIart to draw our attention to #ArmisticeDay, marking the ending of WWI on this date with an image of a #poppy, such as can be found in great abundance #InFlandersFields.

MIST1024/PIZZATOE-MOMO-HALLOWEEN_ZOMBIE_BRIDE

Mistigram: this #ANSIart screen, a guest submission by Momo of Pizzatoe, a study in drapery and illumination, eerily is described in its filename as "Zombie Bride". You always wanna lift that veil all the way back before you plant your first kiss as man and wife, fellas! This piece was included in last month's spooky MIST1024 artpack collection.

ADEPTAPRIL/NOV10

Mistigram: AdeptApril has drawn a stylized #ANSIart #telephone handset today in order to metaphorically convey that today is #AreaCode Day! Back when we were confined to the use of landlines and local calling plans, when telecommunications were conducted through #dialup connections over phone lines, the boundaries of these invisible territories demarcated specific manifestations of cyberspace that were beyond our reach. We make a big deal about having been established and rooted in area code #604 -- describing the province of British Columbia in Canada -- and coincidentally just a couple of days ago we wrote an extensive gloss of our home area code on a wiki we recently established, over at https://github.com/NicheInterests/mistfunk/wiki/area-code-604 , since entries pertaining to our corner of cyberspace are slowly but surely finding themselves purged from Wikipedia. If there are other subjects you'd like to see covered, please drop a line -- or feel free to send in an article yourself!

MIST1024/THE_WAR_ON_CHRISTMAS-SPLATTER_HAUS

Mistigram: this pointy oldschool #ASCIIart logo promoting nolageek's #Splatterhaus BBS (to which you can connect via https://www.splatter.haus/) was drawn by The War On Christmas and included in last month's spooky MIST1024 artpack collection.

ADEPTAPRIL/NOV09

Mistigram: in 2001, today's date was proclaimed to be World #Freedom Day, in honour of the fall of the #BerlinWall (pictured in #ANSIart, drawn by AdeptApril) on this day in 1989.

MIST1024/HORSENBURGER-THE_BITCH_IS_BACK

Mistigram: #theBitchIsBack. @horsenburger drew a double-wide #teletext arrangement of this iconic scene from #Alien3, where #SigourneyWeaver's #EllenRipley is menaced (but ultimately left unscathed) by a rampaging #xenomorph with a hyperactive salivary gland. This screen was included in the spooky new MIST1024 artpack collection.

ADEPTAPRIL/NOV08

Mistigram: FUND. Oh, ahem, welcome back! AdeptApril is using #ANSIart to celebrate World Town Planning Day today, specifically invoking the aesthetic of the very earliest versions of Will Wright's #SimCity by Maxis.

MIST1024/PIZZATOE-JACKEY-EVIL_GIRL

Mistigram: horned skull... bats... tiny jack o lantern pendant and backpack... autumn leaves... this devilish "evil girl" has all of the requisite seasonal accessories, and was drawn in #ANSIart by special guest Jackey of Pizzatoe and included in the spooky new MIST1024 artpack collection.

ADEPTAPRIL/NOV07

Mistigram: AdeptApril's #ANSIart screen today recognizes that on this date in 1973, New Jersey became the first state to allow girls to play #LittleLeague #baseball, after Civil Rights hearing officer Sylvia Pressler ruled that prohibiting eleven-year-old Marcia Pepe of Hoboken from playing violated state and federal anti-discrimination laws. Batter up!
