Mistigram: our community was created and is administered in Canada, and @horsenburger’s latest #teletext memorial, for #AbdirahmanAbdi, reminds us that America’s polite neighbours have much reconciliation and justice work ahead of them also. “Abdirahman was a Somali Muslim refugee who settled with his family in Ottawa, Canada in 2009. He was almost certainly autistic and was described as a quiet, shy, polite man, who was socially awkward and would always greet people he knew with a handshake and a "Hi, how are you?” On the day of his death he went to his local coffee shop and approached a couple at a table. He started to talk to them and then tried to shake the woman’s hands. She panicked and pulled away from him and Abi left.

She then called the police and told them a crazy man tried to assault her. The police arrived and Abi ran from them. They chased, caught him, took him down with batons and pepper spray then continued to beat and kick him. Abi pleaded in Somali and members of the public tried to get the officers to stop but they didn’t until he was unconscious. They then handcuffed him and left him in a pool of blood.

It took 10 minutes before they tried CPR but he was already dead. Constable Daniel Montsion was charged with manslaughter and Constable Weir was classified as a witness.
This was a brutal attack on a helpless man with special needs which resulted in his horrific death and a scared community.“ #BlackLivesMatter #blacklivesmattercanada https://instagr.am/p/CBYnmWPnsWY/
